How to change the engine oil and filter
Regularly changing your engine oil and filter is one of the most important things you can do to keep your Ventrac running well. Over time, your oil will break down and your filter will become clogged with contaminants. Depending upon your engine model, operating habits, tasks performed, and work conditions, the change interval, after initial break-in, maybe 50 or 100 hours (consult your operator’s manual for service intervals).

- Contact with engine oil can irritate your skin. Wear protective gloves when working with engine oil. If you come in contact with engine oil, wash it off immediately.
- Oil is hazardous to the environment. Drain engine oil into an approved container. Dispose of used engine oil in accordance with local laws.

- Use disposable nitrile gloves. Used motor oil contains many toxic contaminants and can be easily absorbed through your skin.
- Consider having a green, eco-friendly oil absorbent product on hand in case you spill some oil. They will absorb oil and will keep your garage and driveway clean. Kitty litter or clay-based products are not effective solutions for this. You can find a wide variety of eco-friendly oil absorbent products online. They are extremely absorbent, easy to use and renewable.
- Find a designated collection site in your area to dispose of your engine oil and filter.

Exposing the Filter. Open the engine hood to access the engine compartment. For 4500K tractors remove the left engine cover (if equipped). For all other 4500 tractors remove the right engine cover (if equipped).

Locate Oil Drain. Place a drain pan underneath the oil drain located in front of the hydraulic oil filters on the left side of the power unit.

Remove the drain cap. Allow the oil to drain into the pan while the oil is warm.
It is recommended to use another wrench (13/16) to hold the drain fitting in place to prevent loosening when removing the drain cap.

Remove the oil filter. Remove the oil filter located on the side of the engine by turning counter-clockwise. Wipe the filter mounting surface with a clean cloth.

Install New Filter. Apply a thin film of clean oil to the gasket of the new oil filter. Install the new filter turning it clockwise until the gasket makes contact with the mounting surface. Tighten the filter ½ to ¾ turn more by hand.

Replace Drain Cap. DO NOT over-tighten.
Torque to 20 ft-lbs or tighten (2) nut flats after finger tight

Add new oil. Remove the oil fill cap and add oil to the engine. Install the oil fill cap and wipe up any oil spills. Refer to the tractor operator’s manual for proper oil specifications and capacity.

Run the engine and check oil level. Start the engine and run at a slow idle for approximately 2 to 3 minutes. Shut off the engine and remove the ignition key.
- Check for oil leaks around the oil filter.
- Check for oil leaks around oil drain cap.
- Check the engine oil level after allowing the engine to cool for approximately 2 minutes. Add oil, if necessary.
- Reinstall the engine cover
- Record the date and hours on the hour meter so you know when the next service will be required.
